Ruby on Rails Tutorial (Rails 5) - Learn Web Development with Rails from Michael Hartl link
It is a pretty advanced rails tutorial, that not only explains ruby and rails, but does is with best practices. The whole tutorial is very well presented and explained and is based on pragamatic test driven development (TDD), version control (Git) and deployment. Following the whole tutorial ends up in a sample application with good test coverage and deployed at Heroku with images hosted on AWS S3.
There is also a whole series of tutorials from the same author called "Learn enough to be dangerous" link. They range from how to use the command line, do version control with git, to html and finally to ruby on rails with the recent addition of how to use action cables. The whole series is very well written and I had never a problem getting the code running.
Ruby on Rails Guides link
A collection of guides to get startet with rails directly from the rails project. The guides range from a hello world app to details about active-record all the way to security issues or latest additions like action-cables. It is always up to date and also a good reference for more advanced rails users.
Data Visualization Toolkit - Using JavaScript, Rails, and Postgres to present data and geospatial information by Barrett Clark link
Basically the title says it all. The book beginns with how to get data into the database, transformation and display it on the front-end - in the beginning with D3.js. The most interesting part for me was the chapter about window functions, subqueries and common table expressions. In generally it was very nice to learn how to avoid active record and switch directly to SQL. The final chapters are about geopatial data with PostGIS on the back-end and Leaflet client facing.
GeoRails link
This is a series of Blog posts from Daniel Azum, the writer of the RGeo gem and the active-record-postgis-adapter gem. Unfortunately the posts date back to 2011 and most of the code shown there is not working any more. Still a very good read but the code has to be adapted. Also be aware that all the platform related infos are exclusively for mac-users.
Introduction to PostGIS and Rails link
These blog posts by Rob Paskin show some very basic examples how to get PostGIS and RGeo up and running. He also mentioned a couple issues that might happen with setting up the system that solved most of the problems I had.
